Staring Contest 2

Intimidation is not something that beavers know. Their prowess as staring champions is in part because they recognize that size does not matter. …. Still building…

Question: Do beavers hang out with otters? – Antony H, Southeast England

Beavers know the importance of a good wingman, and nearly without exception, otters fill that bill. Their ice breaking skills are legendary. And they are not afraid to throw themselves on a grenade for a good beaver buddy. “Otters never c-block” is a phrase known throughout the animal kingdom.

Beavers do not in general watch TV, but they do enjoy a good cartoon every now and then. Angry Beavers was about as true to beaver life as Married With Children was for people. But funny is funny.

Gardening

Engineering is the career most beavers will follow, as building dams is their nature. But there are those who work, either full time or as a hobby, in tending a garden. Those farm beavers have a gait of strength and confidence that they gain from the knowledge that they are growing food. And they plant lots of broccoli, even though they hate how it tastes. Can’t explain that part.

Humor

Clownish at times, beavers are known not just for having a sense of humor, but for having one that is slightly skewed. You may have your own example, but one favorite joke for beavers is this. “How do you stop a clown from laughing? Hit them in the face with an axe.”

One Hand

Historically, people have asked why the keyboard is laid out the way it is, with the keys not alphabetical. The reasons are varied, but one fortuitous offshoot is that the word ‘beaver’ can be typed with one hand. That means one can hold coffee and type ‘beaver’ all afternoon, if that were your thing.

Programming is a skill possessed by a surprising number of beavers. Because their culture is a work-hard one that doesn’t necessarily adhere to a 9-5 schedule, universities grant many scholarships to beavers who enter the programming track. The hard working culture suits this career track very well.
